What Is Sexual Dysfunction?
Both men and women can have sexual dysfunction. It simply means
a problem related to sexuality or the sexual experience. For women,
there are four distinct areas of sexual dysfunction: desire, arousal,
orgasm and pain.
1) Desire Disorders - women with
infrequent or no sexual thoughts or fantasies have a low sex drive
or libido. Sex doesn't interest them.
2) Arousal Disorders - you may have sexual thoughts, but
have trouble becoming or staying aroused. When the body is aroused,
blood flow increases to the pelvic area, blood vessels expand
and the clitoris enlarges with blood. Muscles in the clitoris
and vagina relax, and the tissues become lubricated.
3) Inability to achieve orgasm - it may be difficult for
you to have an orgasm or you may rarely or never have one.
4) Pain during sex - sexual intercourse or any type of
vaginal penetration may be painful. The vaginal tissues may be
irritated from an infection or the pain may be deeper in the pelvic
area. The vaginal muscles may be too tight, making penetration
uncomfortable. Sometimes a more serious condition, called vaginismus,
an involuntary spasm of the vaginal muscles, makes penetration
very difficult.
