What is Pseudofolliculitis Barbae and will this laser treat it?
Over 12 million African American men, and millions of men of all ethnicities, suffer from shaving bumps or PFB (Pseudofolliculitis Barbae). Women with facial hair can also suffer from this painful condition. These shave bumps can be unsightly and painful as thick, curly hair does not grow straight out when it is waxed or shaved close to the skin. Instead, as the hair begins to grow out of the hair follicle, the sharp, thick hair is irritating to the skin. Because it is curly, the hair often re-pierces the skin and re-inserts itself as an ingrown hair. This process creates small, inflamed, painful bumps, or PFB.
Finally, an answer for this lies in the CoolGlide Excel Laser from Cutera.
It offers one of the first permanent treatments to this condition as it destroys the actual hair follicle and provides long-term relief. Since this condition generally affects men and women with darker skin types, lasers up to date have not been able to safely treat these patients. However, with the unique wavelength and pulsewidth settings of the CoolGlide Excel, clinicians are able to help these patients who have suffered long enough with this condition.
Different Lasers Exist:
Lasers treat at specific wavelengths which affects their effectiveness and the sensation the patient feels when having laser hair reduction done. Many of the older lasers were more painful than today's newer technology, with the feeling often described as a rubber band snap. The CoolGlide laser is brand new technology that is virtually painless, and will work on dark or tan skin. The sensation of the CoolGlide is described more like a deep tingle while a cooling plate passes over the skin. In addition, topical anesthetics or cold packs may be used for extremely sensitive areas. Cutera also offers a newer Prowave for laser hair removal. Depending upon your skin type and sun exposure, our trained medical personnel will advise you of which laser is right for you.
All Facilities Are Not Equal:
Select a facility where the medical personnel and aestheticians have been properly trained and certified in the safe use of the laser. Lasers can burn the skin if not used properly. This is why a laser hair reduction center must be affiliated with a doctor. Many medical spas do not have a doctor or advanced nurse practitioner on site at all times. Dr. Wood is a Certified Laser Safety Officer and insists on the highest standards in laser safety and effectiveness. In addition, Dr. Wood is not only trained, but is a trainer herself. This expertise throughout the office provides a level of safety not found in other offices.
The medical director may office on the other side of the state:
Because laser hair reduction is a medical procedure, each laser facility must be affiliated with a doctor. But, in the state of Texas, the doctor only has to be licensed in the state. They do not have to be in the facility. Again, we have taken the extra steps to have a fully licensed, practicing, medical doctor right here in the office. In this area, most other laser hair reduction facilities do not have this added benefit.
How Lasers Are Revolutionizing Hair Removal
Laser hair removal works by shooting bursts of energy into the skin which is absorbed by the hair follicle but leaves the skin unharmed. This energy destroys the actively growing hair follicles. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time, but actually go through three distinct phases: Growth, regression, and resting. Lasers work by disabling the hair that is in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments will be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area. Generally 6-8 treatments are required to reduce or permanently remove hair. The number of treatments depends upon the area of the body, the texture of the hair, and the color of skin being treated. But, the Cool Glide laser permits more people to consider this procedure than ever before. This easy reference guide will help you determine your probability of success:
What if I have had previous laser hair failure and I am left with fine, light hair?
Available now, CoolGlide treatment protocols have been specifically developed for you. No other lasers have this unique capability. With state of the art treatments, one can hope to achieve a 40% reduction with fine, light hair which was previously unresponsive to treatments or which resulted from other, ineffective hair removal systems. Purely blonde or red or grey hair, however, are not treatable, and this holds true for ANY laser on the market.
Can men be treated for laser hair reduction?
Absolutely. Recent surveys show less and less of a tolerance among younger generations for hair on the back and shoulders. Lasers at Dermalase are fast and effective and perfect for large areas such as these. Many women hate back and shoulder hair as well, and call it the number one most bothersome male trait. As noted above, men with PFB are perfect candidates for the CoolGlide Excel Laser system, so it works well on the face for any man tired of shaving. Though our office is designed mostly for women, we have treated many men successfully who appreciate the professional atmosphere and comfortable surroundings of our office in Frisco. Our staff will go out of their way to make you feel relaxed and at ease in our office.
The number of treatments also varies depending upon the area of the body being treated. Each case is individual, so even giving guidelines is difficult. But, laser hair removal is not only effective; it is also a very quick process relative to other hair removal options.
Dermalase offers two types of lasers for the reduction of hair due to the many skin types which we see. Living in Texas, we must provide for those patients with ongoing sun exposure, and we have added the CoolGlide laser which is FDA approved for sun-tanned skin and darker skin types. This Yag laser gently treats unwanted, pigmented hair with a wavelength designed to destroy the hair follicle. At the same time, the latest in technology enables us to protect darker skin from burning and damage. Those who experience it describe little discomfort as the skin is cooled with use. Also, the procedure is quite quick and performed easily on one's lunch hour.
Our second laser is the Prowave, also by Cutera, which offers speed and cooling for lighter skinned individuals. Again, this laser is safe and effective, while providing little discomfort. Many men can have their entire back treated in 45 minutes or less. For those who have sat through lengthy, time consuming procedures, this one is much more comfortable and convenient. Patients who experience this laser are amazed at the results and the short procedure time.
All lasers at Dermalase are FDA approved for permanent hair reduction. Dr. Wood has sought the best technology for her patients. She has tried to meet the needs of those under our Texas sun, as well as those individuals who have been turned away from other laser procedures because they had darker skin types. In other words, procedures do not have to be discontinued in the summer months, and all individuals with pigmented hair are candidates for these procedures.
